I Support Abortion When:
· When a woman had no other choice, because all of her choices before she got pregnant were “made for her” by people other than made for HER by HERSELF.
· When a woman is unable to get contraceptives that will prevent her from getting pregnant in the first place, either because her insurance won’t cover it, or because she cannot afford it.
· When it isn’t her fault that birth control she takes as directed fails.
· When a woman was raped. Not only because her rapist got her pregnant, but because she has to be reminded of it when she doesn’t get her period, when the pregnancy test is positive, and when the clinician tells her “yes, you’re pregnant.” And even some instances, when she is forced to wait longer to get an abortion, forced to listen to the heart-beat of the fetus someone else forcibly put inside her, or even undergo an equally violating vaginal exam, so she can SEE and HEAR the rapists’ creation.
· When a coat-hanger and/or a tumble down the stairs have become the only options.
· When a young girl is assaulted by a man she trusts – her father, brother, uncle, cousin, the friend on the bus she talks to every, single day, the priest who takes her confession and absolves her of her sins…. Her mind wasn’t ready for it, and neither was her womb, but the violation created a child – a child she had no choice in creating – and should not have to be responsible for.
· When politicians and religious groups are telling a woman she is nothing more than a thing made for pro-creation, and that her life is no longer valid when there is a fetus inside her womb.
· When politicians and religious groups will protest against her and defend her unborn child, but refuse to pay for food stamps, child care, health care, and education for that child when it leaves her womb takes its first breath.
· When they “blame” her for getting pregnant – as if she climbed on top of herself, created sperm by herself, ejaculated inside herself, and got herself pregnant.
· When the government will spend billions of dollars funding pro-life political rhetoric and war, but cannot find the cash to take care of the children living in poverty right now.
· When the government refuses to acknowledge the overwhelming population.
· When the government will turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to those women who protect and serve our country in the military when they are raped. They will buy more guns for the men, but not provide PTSD therapy for women who were raped, or go after the men who rape. They’ll dishonorably discharge the woman, disgrace her, and say she asked for it.
· When society deems it okay for men to walk out the door, not pay child support, play any role in the life of the child, and/or refuse to support the woman they know they got pregnant.
· When the baby will die inside her or the baby will kill her, and the doctor knows it, but refuses to help her or do anything other than hand her a Jesus Pamphlet and send her home, broken and terrified of what is growing inside her.
· When the doctor refuses to “tie the tubes” of a woman who has had six children and does not want anymore, because according to the doctor’s God, it is morally wrong. Forget about “First, do no harm,” and putting the patient first. The doctor’s conscience and God dictate the doctor’s actions – not ethical obligation to do what the patient asks.
· When doctors are terrified of going to work because picketers are threatening their lives and the lives of their patients’.
· When they bring out the line, “God wanted this for you.” Does God WANT a child to have a child? Does God WANT a woman to have to give birth to her rapists’ child? Does God WANT a woman to die because of the fetus growing inside her? Does God WANT a woman living in poverty, with three children already, to have another baby she cannot afford? Does God WANT a baby to be born in a home where there are drugs or physical violence, and the woman cannot escape? Ask God and when you get a definitive answer, let us women know – we’ll just be sitting here, pregnant, and unable to control our own bodies in the mean time.
· When a teenager makes a mistake and is told she must pay for it the rest of her life.
· When young women are made to feel ashamed for getting pregnant, but young men aren’t made to feel the exact, same shame for getting that young woman pregnant.
· When poverty makes it nearly impossible to get any form of birth control.
· When a minimum wage job, no college education, no transportation, no health insurance, and no form of financial or moral support are in sight.
· When the woman is a “slut” or a “whore,” but the guy is “just an idiot.”
· When politicians are allowed to spout sarcastic rhetoric about “the good old days when women used to hold aspirin between their thighs” to prevent pregnancy. As if women aren’t traumatized enough, you have to bring back “the good old days” — which is a phrase that does nothing more than remind women of the days when it was legal to rape your wife, when back-alley abortions were the only abortions, when there was no birth control other than condoms you hoped wouldn’t break, and when she wasn’t a person, but an extension of a man, and therefore, nothing more than a puppet on a string, meant to cook, clean, rear the children, sexually satisfy her husband, and keep her mouth shut.
· When the only sex-education is either no education, abstinence-only education, STD “let’s show you pictures that will terrify you into keeping your pants ON” education, or “shit you heard about pussies, giving head, dicks, and fucking” from your peers.
· When a woman is told she should have kept her legs closed, but a man isn’t told he should have kept it in his pants.
Abortion should not have to be a form of birth control. Birth control should be affordable, readily available, and easily accessible to any woman who wants it. When birth control fails, abortion should be as equally affordable, readily available, and easily accessible to any woman who wants one.
